Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance
 
Project Overview
The District is working towards compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in all of its properties.  This program encompasses ADA Compliance Surveys, ADA Compliance Design, Building Renovation, and Signage Construction.

Project: Emery Shelter
 
Description: 
The Emery Shelter, a former school building, is a 2-story structure with a basement that was constructed in 1902. The current use for this facility is a transitional shelter for 100 men. The construction work in progress for this site will provide an accessible entrance, access to all levels of the building via elevator, accessible toilet rooms, door and hardware modifications and the installation of an accessible parking space, all in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.  The listed modifications will provide improved public access to this facility and its programs.

Project: Madison Shelter
 
Description: 
The Madison Shelter is a historic 2-story building plus basement, that was constructed in 1889. This former elementary school serves as a shelter site for 68 women. A new elevator with an accessible entrance, modified toilet rooms and a new handicapped parking space will be constructed in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. The completed ADA work will permit those with disabilities, greater access to this site and improved access to the facility’s programs.

Project: New York Avenue Shelter
 
Description: 
The New York Avenue Shelter is undergoing modifications to meet accessibility requirements in compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. This facility provides Low Barrier Shelter for over 360 men, and Temporary Shelter for 12 men.  Construction work underway for this site includes door/hardware modifications, toilet room modifications, installation of visual/audio fire alarm devices, ramps for floor level changes, handrail modifications, power door operators, signage and development of a handicapped parking space and ramp.
